Make a Drey for Possums

Did you know that Ringtail possums live in dreys?

A drey is a protective, hollow ball they make with leaves and sticks to protect themselves from the weather while they sleep.

You can make dreys for us to give to the recovering ringtails at Wild Days so they have a home to sleep in.

Instructions:

You will need:
- 2x Hanging Baskets with lining
- 10x Small Cable Ties
- A handful of small Eucalyptus branches with leaves
- Wire cutters/secateurs
- Scissors

What To Do:
  1. Take one Hanging Basket and cut/bend the wires to create space for an entry hole next to the main wire circle, around 10cm in diameter.
  2. Cut the liner to match the hole in the wire and fold flap back, securing it with a cable tie.
  3. On the opposite side to the entry hole, cut a slit that will be used as an emergency exit.
  4. On both baskets, secure the liner to the wire frame in the centre of the basket.
  5. Turn the basket with the doors upside down and match it up with the other one.  Secure them together with cable ties, ensuring the cable ties go through the liner as well as around the wire.
  6. Take three of the hanger chains and connect them evenly around the join of the drey, connecting to one hook at the end (to hang the drey).
  7. Take your Eucalyptus branches and weave them through the wire.  This creates a camouflage layer for the drey.

Here is a video of how to make a drey:
