Make a Seed Bell

Instructions:

The many different types of birds who stay at Wild Days need many different seeds and foods to recover. You can help by making seed bells for seed-eating birds.

You will need help from an adult to use the oven.

For one seed bell, you will need:
-  A small Terracotta Pot or an Oven-Proof Mug/small bowl
-  2x Egg whites
-  Wildbird Seed mix OR Small parrot seed mix
-  Oven bag or baking paper
-  20cm or more of wire
What To Do:
  1. Preheat oven to 120 degrees Celcius,
  2. Line your terracotta pot/mug or bowl with the oven bag or baking paper,
  3. Whisk the egg whites in a bowl until they are soft and fluffy,
  4. Mix the bird seed with the egg whites and put the mixture into the pot/mug/bowl.  Push down firmly,
  5. Bend the ends of the wire into loops (so the birds don't hurt themselves) and stick the wire into the centre of the bird seed.  Make sure it hits the bottom of the pot/mug/bowl,
  6. Bake for 60-90 minutes or until seed is solid.
  7. Carefully remove from the oven and when they have cooled down a little, twist the bell so it comes out of the pot/mug/bowl.
